When to Plant Corn

Corn is a summer vegetable so planting corn help focuses on making sure that the corn is planted approximately two weeks before the last frost. Soil for planting corn should be rich, sandy loam that stays moist without being overly wet. If the soil you’re working with isn’t up to par, compost can go a long way to enriching the soil before you plant. Corn should be planted in side-by-side rows so pollination can occur and make sure the plants are in full sun. Plant the seeds about 1 1/2-2 inches deep making sure clumps and clots of soil are broken up at least 8 inches or so below where the seeds will be before planting. Don’t forget to fertilize your corn as you do any other vegetable in your garden. If a late frost hits your area make sure your seedlings are covered with a plastic tarp to prevent them from freezing. Mulching is good but not necessary. If you decide to grow corn again, make sure you don’t plant the corn in the same area as the year before so rotate crops yearly.
